MASTERPLAN Singer Says A Lot Of Newer Musicians Play With No Feeling
October 11, 2004In a recent interview with Rockdetector.com editor Garry Sharpe-Young, MASTERPLAN singer Jorn Lande spoke about how he believes the band is shaping up and why he thinks a lot of the newer groups are lacking in creativity. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
Rockdetector.com: Is it easy for you to find musicians with the same way as thinking to work with?
Jorn Lande: "That's a good question because, to be honest, it can be difficult. A lot of these guys, guitarists, drummers, are not really musicians they are like technicians or mathematicians, you know?! They can play very technical but with no feeling at all."
Rockdetector.com: Like Yngwie?
Jorn Lande: "You said that!"
Rockdetector.com: Why do you think that is? The lack of feeling?
Jorn Lande: "I think it is because a lot of these guys are great at copying something and making it better, faster, more technical. They learn from that — or computers, or video games. Before, the guys would learn from playing live in the clubs and they would be influenced by others sure, but they had time to develop their own way of doing things. I think they lived differently too, in a much more natural way."
Rockdetector.com: How do you mean?
Jorn Lande: "More in tune with nature, creativity. Just being a musician, an artist. I mean, if I say to a drummer now, 'Hey, borrow my motorbike,' they go, 'Ah no, I can't do that, I have to protect myself.' It's just a completely different way of thinking. I am sure people like John Bonham never used to think like that."
Rockdetector.com: Is that the aim of this new MASTERPLAN album? To put some "feeling" back into rock music?
Jorn Lande: "I hope we can. I know Roland and Uli really want to make something very different and their way of thinking has changed quite a bit. Everyone in the band is a great player, but now we're after that feeling. It also helps that we are more of a band now too. Getting the feeling is not something you can turn on and off because it has to come from your heart and soul. I think this is something so many people just don't understand today. It's a big shame, because it is what makes music great. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN or DEEP PURPLE or BLACK SABBATH or WHITESNAKE, and those guys, I get a feeling. I am sure everybody does. It's the emotion of the song. When music is really great, it can give you something like nothing else, that it is why it is so important to people. It does not matter how many notes you can play or how high a note you can reach. Without feeling, the music means nothing."
Rockdetector.com: Do you have any guests on this album?
Jorn Lande: "No, I nearly did a duet with a female singer but we thought that this record really does not need it. It's a MASTERPLAN record and I don't think we need a hundred special guests just to get some press. We just want people to listen to the music this time and forget who was in what band before."
